The limit is a strict 0.00%, it applies 24/7 across every Australian state and territory, and it doesn't matter whether it's a Tuesday commute or a Saturday night out. The consequences also land harder on P-platers: an instant loss of licence, fines, and a real setback on the road to a full licence.

Weekend getaways usually start with a few drinks the night before an early start, or a round at a stopover on the way. Regional and rural roads mean less traffic, but also less margin for error and often a longer wait for help if something goes wrong. Checking your BAC before you get back behind the wheel takes a few seconds and removes any doubt before a long drive with friends counting on you.
