Keeping the town moving since 2005
Transport safety is a critical concern for any passenger transport operation, particularly when managing large fleets and meeting the expectations of high-profile clients. Ensuring that drivers are fit for duty, compliant with regulations, and operating within a culture of safety presents ongoing challenges for companies across Australia.
Bunbury Bus Service is a family owned and operated company located in Bunbury, Western Australia. This team has been running for over 20 years in the Southwest with over 40 years of experience in the Passenger Transport industry.
The company provides a broad range of passenger transport services, including school charters, airport transfers, wine and brewery tours, corporate transfers, wedding services and private charters, with a strong focus on industrial staff transport solutions.
Many of the businesses that engage Bunbury Bus Service are Tier 1 contractors and multinational organisations, which means safety and compliance expectations are extremely high. As a result, Bunbury Bus Service has built its operations around the same principles, with a strategy centred on operating above industry standards to make engagement with clients as seamless as possible and to encourage long term partnerships.
Meeting new compliance challenges
A key challenge arose when one of their clients introduced alcohol testing as a mandatory compliance requirement. This requirement went beyond basic testing and included the need to clearly recognise and prove the identity of the employee being tested.
At the time, Bunbury Bus Service was conducting only a small number of daily tests for a single contractor, with testing requirements varying depending on the vehicle being used and the specific client compliance obligations.
Tests were carried out both at the depot and remotely by drivers in their vehicles before starting their shift, creating the need for a solution that could support both fixed and mobile operations while maintaining strong identity verification.
How Andatech helped Bunbury Bus Service save the day
Andatech provided an integrated solution that addressed these requirements through a combination of fixed and mobile breath alcohol testing devices connected to the Andalink System.
The Soberlive FRX was implemented as the fixed-location solution at the bus depot, allowing employees departing from this site to complete tests easily. Using facial recognition technology, the Soberlive FRX enables unsupervised testing while still providing proof of identity, making it a convenient and reliable option for depot-based operations.
For drivers operating remotely, either from home or another depot, the Prodigy 3 was introduced as the mobile solution. During the sampling process, the Prodigy 3 captures an image of the user and wirelessly transmits the data via its internal SIM card to the Andalink system, ensuring identity verification and accurate record keeping.
The introduction of Andatech’s products has simplified monthly compliance reporting by providing a single, integrated platform for both fixed and mobile testing. “Andatech products have contributed to the ease of monthly compliance reporting by offering an integrated solution to both installed and mobile solutions,” says Brad.
This has supported Bunbury Bus Service in maintaining compliance while laying the groundwork for future expansion of testing across its entire workforce and fleet. Up to six employees are currently tested regularly, with plans in place to broaden the program as compliance requirements grow.
An impact beyond compliance
Beyond operational improvements, the impact has also been cultural. Employees can see the company’s commitment to becoming a more professional and safety conscious organisation, reinforcing the importance of health, safety and environmental standards.
Bunbury Bus Service has also been able to use these strengthened HSE policies as part of its marketing efforts when tendering for new contracts, helping to demonstrate its readiness to meet stringent client compliance expectations.
By combining the Soberlive FRX for fixed locations and the Prodigy 3 for mobile operations, Bunbury Bus Service has found a solution that supports both compliance and flexibility. With plans to expand testing in the future, Andatech continues to play a key role in supporting safer, more professional transport operations.
